New AI Chip Speeds Up Everything
IBM's San Jose-based researchers have revealed the NorthPole processor chip, a game-changer in the world of computing. This brain-inspired chip has faster performance with lower power consumption – setting a new standard for AI architectures.
Damien Querlioz, a nanoelectronics expert at the University of Paris-Saclay, describes the energy efficiency of the NorthPole chip as astonishing. The study, recently published in Science, demonstrates a seamless integration of computing and memory on a large scale, challenging established norms in computer architecture.
The NorthPole chip operates on neural networks, sophisticated arrays of computational units programmed to identify patterns in data. This multi-layered system progresses from basic data input, like pixels in an image, to increasingly complex pattern recognition.
The result? An output that can determine the likelihood of various objects in an image, like cats or cars.
Traditionally, some chips rely on external memory known as RAM, causing delays due to data transfers. This is known as the Von Neumann bottleneck. NorthPole, however, boasts 256 individual cores, each equipped with its own memory, effectively circumventing this bottleneck within each core.
These cores are interconnected, taking inspiration from the white-matter connections in the human cerebral cortex. While these design principles aren't entirely new, their amalgamation in one chip sets NorthPole leagues ahead in image recognition benchmarks. It operates at just a fifth of the energy consumption of current state-of-the-art AI chips, even without employing the latest manufacturing processes.
Yet, while NorthPole's 224 megabytes of RAM represent a substantial advance, it might fall short for processing vast language models like ChatGPT. Additionally, it requires pre-training on a separate machine. Nevertheless, it holds great promise for applications where speed is crucial, such as in self-driving cars.
IBM's NorthPole chip advances the placement of memory units, positioning them as close as possible to core computing elements. Concurrently, other researchers are exploring innovative avenues using novel materials and manufacturing processes, where memory units themselves can conduct computations.
Another promising approach, pioneered by various teams including an IBM lab in Zurich, Switzerland, involves altering a circuit element's crystal structure for information storage. The scalability and economic viability of these newer methods remain to be seen, but the horizon for AI and computing appears brighter than ever.
