OpenAI CEO launches cryptocurrency
OpenAI has quickly grown to become one of the most talked about companies in the world, but CEO Sam Altman somehow still finds time to work on other stuff too.
Earlier this week, he launched Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency.
The centerpiece of Worldcoin is its World ID, touted as a "digital passport" that verifies the authenticity of individuals, distinguishing them from AI bots. Acquiring a World ID involves a simple process - users sign up and undergo an in-person iris scan using the "orb," a silver ball akin to the size of a bowling ball. Once the scan confirms the person's humanity, they are granted a unique World ID.
Tools for Humanity, a company with offices in San Francisco and Berlin, is the driving force behind Worldcoin's ambitious endeavor.
During its beta phase, Worldcoin amassed an impressive user base of 2 million individuals. With the official launch, they are expanding "orbing" operations to 35 cities across 20 countries. In certain countries, users are even rewarded with Worldcoin's cryptocurrency token WLD as an incentive.
The value of WLD experienced a surge during early trading on Monday. On Binance, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, it reached a peak of $5.29, starting from its initial price of $0.15. The trading volume amounted to an astounding $25.1 million.
One of the noteworthy features of World IDs is their storage using blockchain technology, ensuring privacy and decentralization.
World IDs also address the challenge of differentiating between real individuals and AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, which produce remarkably human-like language. As AI's presence grows, such verification methods gain relevance in the digital landscape.
Sam Altman is the leader behind Worldcoin. He envisions a future shaped by AI and explores potential economic implications. Universal basic income (UBI) emerges as an intriguing concept to address income inequality, considering AI's potential to replace human labor. World IDs could play a role in reducing fraud when implementing UBI.
While the idea of a UBI-dominated world remains speculative, Altman believes in laying the groundwork for experimental approaches, reflecting Worldcoin's commitment to progress.
