Ilya Sutskever's New Venture: Safe Superintelligence
Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former Chief Scientist at OpenAI (who only left last month) has just launched his new project, Safe Superintelligence Inc. This startup aims to develop a superintelligent AI system that prioritizes safety without the immediate pressure of commercialization. Together with co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, Sutskever plans to innovate AI safety from the core of its technology, reminiscent of nuclear safety standards, not just superficial measures.
Based in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, Safe Superintelligence sets itself apart by focusing solely on research. The company does not plan to release any AI products until they achieve their goal of a safe superintelligence. Sutskever's team is committed to engineering an AI that surpasses human intelligence while adhering to values that promote liberty and democracy.
Despite the ambitious scope of their project, Sutskever is confident about funding, emphasizing the real challenge is creating an AI that contributes positively to humanity. Here is what he has to say in an interview with Bloomberg:
“At the most basic level, safe superintelligence should have the property that it will not harm humanity at a large scale,” Sutskever says. “After this, we can say we would like it to be a force for good. We would like to be operating on top of some key values. Some of the values we were thinking about are maybe the values that have been so successful in the past few hundred years that underpin liberal democracies, like liberty, democracy, freedom.”
