OpenAI vs the FTC
As if getting banned in Italy wasn’t bad enough, OpenAI has yet another problem to deal with…
The AI ethics group “Center for AI and Digital Policy” (CAIDP).
The CAIDP has filed a complaint with the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against the company, claiming that ChatGTP-4 violates the FTC’s rules against unfair and deceptive practices.
The CAIDP is calling for a pause on large generative AI experiments, citing concerns that GPT-4 could be used to create dangerous propaganda and claiming that the "biased and deceptive" model threatens both privacy and public safety.
“OpenAI released GPT-4 to the public for commercial use with full knowledge of these risks,” stated the complaint, calling for OpenAI to halt any further deployment of GPT models until they can be independently assessed by the FTC.
In response, OpenAI is vowing to address concerns and implement necessary changes.
After all, a responsible AI overlord is what we're all after, right?
The Robot Wars
1X Neo versus Tesla Optimus
OpenAI co-founders Sam Altman and Elon Musk have found yet another thing to fight over, thanks to Sam’s latest investment in Norwegian robotics company 1X.
Altman was the lead investor in 1X’s most recent funding round (through the Microsoft-backed OpenAI Startup Fund), making it a real possibility that the two tech founders could clash in a transformers-style robot battle in the not-too-distant future.
A number of companies are now in the race to be the first to bring a commercial humanoid robot to market (including Disney if you can believe it), and for good reason.
According to a 2022 Goldman Sachs report, humanoid robots could be a $150 billion-a-year business within the next 15 years, approaching the scale of the current global EV market.
