🤖 OpenAI has internally defined 5 levels of AGI
Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!
Today, we’re talking about OpenAI’s roadmap to AGI 👀
OpenAI's New Milestones in the Quest for AGI
OpenAI recently unveiled a structured roadmap toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), an aspiration that could redefine technological capabilities. In a revealing all-hands meeting, OpenAI introduced a five-level classification system designed to measure its progression towards creating software that surpasses human problem-solving skills.
At the core of this classification is the transition from current AI capabilities, which facilitate basic conversational interactions (Level 1), to the pinnacle of AI achievement—systems that can autonomously perform the functions of an entire organization (Level 5). Currently, OpenAI positions itself at Level 1, on the brink of advancing to Level 2, dubbed "Reasoners." This stage represents AI that can tackle complex problem-solving tasks equivalent to a human with a doctorate-level education, albeit without using any external tools. Here is a recap of the 5 levels:
Level 1 - Basic AI:
AI systems capable of engaging in conversational language with people, similar to the current capabilities of tools like ChatGPT.
Level 2 - Reasoners:
AI that can perform basic problem-solving tasks as effectively as a human with a doctorate-level education who does not have access to any tools.
Level 3 - Agents:
AI systems that can operate autonomously for several days, taking actions on a user’s behalf without requiring constant guidance or intervention.
Level 4 - Innovators:
AI that can generate new innovations, potentially creating or discovering solutions and ideas that were not previously conceived by humans.
Level 5 - Organizations:
The most advanced level, where AI systems can perform the roles and functions of an entire organization, effectively managing and operating complex tasks and decisions independently.
This strategic framework was shared internally with an eye towards broader disclosure to investors and the public, reflecting OpenAI’s (new?) commitment to transparency in its developmental strides and safety considerations. According to OpenAI's executives, this approach not only charts a path forward but also aligns with methodologies similar to those used in other industries, such as the gradations of automation in self-driving cars.
A demonstration featuring their GPT-4 AI model showcased abilities that hint at human-like reasoning, signalling potential early advancements into the second tier of their framework. This move demonstrates OpenAI's ambition to not merely enhance existing technologies but to spearhead the creation of AGI within this decade, a vision prominently championed by CEO Sam Altman.
As the concept of AGI continues to captivate and challenge global AI researchers, OpenAI’s structured approach offers a clear, albeit ambitious, glimpse into a future where AI could independently innovate and operate beyond human capabilities 👀
Do you think OpenAI will achieve its Level 2 'Reasoner' status within the next two years? |
