OpenAI Might Have Created an AI That’s “Too Strong”

A recently reported letter from researchers to OpenAI’s board has brought light to a truly groundbreaking discovery that could potentially have massive implications for humanity as a whole. This revelation has also been linked, albeit not solely, to the recent firing and then rehiring of CEO Sam Altman.

Sources suggest that OpenAI's researchers warned the board about an AI algorithm named Q* (pronounced Q-Star) – which is capable of autonomously solving grade school math problems, showcasing a step toward AGI. Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's chief scientist, is credited with the development of Q-Star.

While the letter highlights the opportunities presented by Q-Star, including accelerating scientific breakthroughs, it also raises serious concerns about the safety precautions taken by OpenAI in handling such advanced AI systems.

The researchers behind Q-Star, Jakub Pachocki and Szymon Sidor,  reportedly left the company after Altman's dismissal, citing safety reasons. However, they returned when Altman resumed his position. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's co-founder, is reportedly working on integrating Q-Star into the company's products.

This letter aligns with previous hints from an OpenAI leaker known as "Jimmy Apples," who suggested in September that "AGI has been achieved internally." CEO Sam Altman even acknowledged this claim but later clarified that it was a joke.

Altman, before his departure, emphasized the need for a breakthrough in current language models to achieve AGI, stating that mere scaling of systems will not get us there. A cryptic statement by Altman at the APEC Summit 2023 hinted at recent advancements pushing the boundaries of discovery.

The Information also reports on a 2021 project by Ilya Sutskever called GPT-Zero, aiming to give a language model more time and computing resources for generating answers and making new academic discoveries.

OpenAI is certainly bringing us interesting times lately…
