OpenAI vs. Elon Musk: The Battle Over AI's Future

OpenAI has publicly refuted Elon Musk's lawsuit claims, stating that Musk once sought "absolute control" over the company by proposing a merger with Tesla or assuming full control himself. In a detailed blog post, OpenAI's co-founders, including Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman, and Wojciech Zaremba, shared their side of the story, emphasizing their decision to reject Musk's terms as they believed it contradicted OpenAI's mission.

Musk's lawsuit accuses OpenAI of deviating from its original nonprofit mission and becoming a "closed-source de facto subsidiary" of Microsoft, primarily focused on profit-making. He alleges this shift represents a breach of contract based on an unspecified "founding agreement." However, OpenAI's response highlights that no formal agreement has been disclosed, and the organization insists on dismissing all of Musk's claims.

The dispute also touches on the openness of OpenAI's research and development. The company defended its stance on not open-sourcing its work on AGI, citing a 2016 email exchange where Musk seemingly agreed with the approach of becoming "less open" as the development of AI advanced (see the screenshot below).

OpenAI's post aims to clarify its position and decisions regarding the transition from a nonprofit to a more closed model, countering Musk's allegations of betraying the original mission. The organization has yet to address some of Musk's other claims, such as those regarding GPT-4 being "a de facto Microsoft proprietary algorithm" and representing AGI, in their public communications.
