OpenAI Is Stealing Google’s Top AI Developers
AI is one of the biggest and fastest-growing markets of the moment, and everyone wants their piece of the pie. There is a lot of money and power at play. And it shows: OpenAI is currently making bold moves to secure top-notch talent from Google, offering irresistible multimillion-dollar packages.
As OpenAI's stock sale approaches completion, the startup aims to triple its valuation, flying beyond $80 billion.
Recruiters at OpenAI have set their sights on seasoned AI researchers at Google, dangling annual compensation packages ranging from $5 million to $10 million, predominantly in the form of enticing stock options, sources reported to The Information. The strategic targeting is specifically directed at Google's brain power behind the Gemini family of AI models.
This talent war is not just a one-way street. Google has been successful in luring high-profile researchers away from OpenAI, using higher salaries as its main temptation weapon. The battleground is intense, with both OpenAI and Google asserting supremacy in computing resources.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has noted internally that Google's computing advantage will persist until Microsoft introduces new AI chips next year. Microsoft's upcoming chip, codenamed "Athena", will supposedly challenge Nvidia's H100 GPU and join Google and Amazon in the competitive AI hardware arena. The Athena chip is anticipated to be first-revealed at the Ignite developer conference in November.
As the industry is looking for alternatives to Nvidia's AI chip dominance, Microsoft is also collaborating with AMD on the MI300X, its next-generation AI chip expected to hit the market in the fourth quarter of this year.
Google has been ahead of the curve, having developed and used its own AI chip, the Tensor Processing Unit, since 2015. TPUs are designed for high-volume, low-precision computing, showcasing superior input/output operations per joule compared to traditional GPUs.
The AI war is at its height on all levels – from talent to chips. But the big question is: who will come out on top?
