Huge Problems at Meta's AI Lab
Meta, previously known as a social media titan, is now navigating internal challenges within its AI research division, Fundamental AI Research (FAIR). Recent departures of key AI experts from Meta highlight deeper issues of internal disagreements over computing resource distribution.
After witnessing AI advancements by OpenAI and other tech leaders, Meta quickly aimed to launch its own competitive language models. However, limited computational power led to disputes within FAIR teams, resulting in resentment and departures.
In 2022, FAIR's US team introduced OPT-175B, a model with 175 billion parameters. At the same time, the Paris-based team was working on the smaller Llama model, emphasizing its efficiency. However, the Paris team felt they received less computational resources compared to the OPT team, leading to increased tensions.
Matters escalated when FAIR launched LLAMA. Just a week before, FAIR's Paris leader, Antoine Bordes, resigned due to burnout, intensifying the rift between the US and Paris teams. This led to more departures, and Meta eventually discontinued the OPT model, merging members from both teams to work on Llama 2.
While Meta's LLAMA and Llama 2 models received public acclaim as free, open-source alternatives to models from OpenAI and Anthropic, internal unrest persisted. Many FAIR researchers and engineers have since left the company.
The root of the tension can be traced back to FAIR's original mission of open-ended AI research, which has evolved as Meta shifted its focus to products. The demand to integrate AI, especially after the success of ChatGPT, added pressure, even with limited resources.
The challenge of resource allocation isn't exclusive to Meta. As AI development grows more intricate and demands more resources, many tech giants are confronting the constraints of specialized chips. This has made retaining AI experts, who are now highly sought after, even more challenging. Notably, over half of the authors of the original Llama research paper have left Meta.
Joelle Pineau, FAIR's head, recognized the tension between teams over resource allocation. She emphasized the importance of retaining top talent, stating that it's where she dedicates most of her time.
Further complicating matters are Meta's internal structural changes, including layoffs and the formation of a new generative AI team for its apps, drawing from FAIR's already reduced researcher pool. While Meta is still determining its optimal structure, agility and team collaboration will be crucial to stay competitive in the ongoing AI talent race.
