Report: Apple has ‘a lot of anxiety’ about ChatGPT
After a long time, Apple seems to finally be ready to make significant marks in the world of AI. At its recent developer conference, the Cupertino giant chose to spotlight "machine learning", unveiling applications like the upgraded iOS 17 autocorrect, empowered by advanced language models, and the "Apple Vision Pro".
Despite initial perceptions, Apple hasn't been napping when it comes to AI. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, there's an effort underway to catch up with the industry's AI surge. An insider at Apple notes that there's a true sense of urgency within Apple, acknowledging a crucial development they might have missed.
Leading this AI charge are John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice presidents of AI and software engineering, along with Eddy Cue, head of services. With an annual budget of $1 billion, they have the resources to put Apple back at the forefront in terms of AI.
Giannandrea's team is on a mission to build a new AI system and elevate Siri's intelligence. While an improved version of Siri might surface next year, the tech is still evolving, with safety concerns in the mix.
Federighi's software development group is integrating AI into the next iOS iteration, using Apple's robust large language model. Meanwhile, Cue's team is exploring how AI can be seamlessly woven into a myriad of applications.
Delving deeper, Apple's development teams are contemplating the integration of generative AI into tools like Xcode. This strategic move could speed up app development, similar to what Microsoft is doing with its GitHub Copilot.
Cue's team is also building productivity apps, like AI assists for tasks like writing in Pages or automating slide presentations in Keynote, similar to the features Microsoft added to its Word and PowerPoint.
In the background, Apple is investing significantly in AI training. The "Foundational Models" team, led by Giannandrea, is diving into conversational AI like ChatGPT, using the "Ajax GPT" model, which has over 200 billion parameters. This research promises more accurate voice commands for iPhones, including an upcoming feature allowing GIFs to be sent via voice command using Apple's Shortcut app.
Apple seems to finally be going all-in on AI, and it will be interesting to follow the developments over the next few months.
