🤖 Robo-repo's, ChatGPT scams, and the future of software

Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!

Here's what we have for you today:

  • Ford’s car-repo technology

  • Nvidia CEO weighs in on A.I.

  • ChatGPT scammers hit the scene

Fords Robo Repo’s

During recessionary cycles (which we may or may not be in the middle of currently, depending on who you talk to) one of the consequences is a spike in the number of people that stop making their car payments.

Typically after car payments are not made for a period of 3 months, the bank that is holding the loan will repossess the vehicle, which can often be a dangerous and problematic process…

But Ford Motors may have a solution.

Ford’s Robo-Repo Patent

According to a patent that Ford has filed titled “Systems and methods to Repossess a Vehicle,” Ford has designed a system for cars to automatically repossess themselves, utilizing the cars self-driving functionality to return the vehicle while avoiding a potentially violent altercation.

And while Ford representative’s have said that the company has no specific plans to integrate the technology into their vehicles, in reality its only a matter of time before all new cars with self-driving capability are equipped with this new Robo-repo system.

Nvidia’s CEO on A.I.

Nvidia has been one of the big winners in the mass adoption of A.I., as their chips are the microprocessors of choice for running the large language models powering tools like ChatGPT.

And as one of the leaders helping to power the A.I. revolution, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang see’s ChatGPT as an inflection point in computing technology on par with the release of Apple’s iPhone.

One area that Huang is particularly excited about is A.I.’s ability to interpret natural language directly into software code, an advancement that will completely revolutionize software development.

“The world now realizes that maybe human language is a perfectly good computer programming language, and that we've democratized computer programming for everyone, almost anyone who could explain in human language a particular task to be performed,” Huang said.

Meaning that, in the not-too-distance future, instead of having to learn a programming language to build a software product, you’ll simply tell a tool like ChatGPT what you want to build, and the tool will spit out a fully functioning app or program.

Sounds like my “dating app for dogs” is coming sooner than I thought!

Counterfeit Chatbots

While much of the tech world is focused on harnessing the incredible power of tools like ChatGPT to build the businesses of the future, the tech-saavy cohort of the criminal class is busy looking for ways to utilize this new technology to steal from people in novel ways.

“We know cybercriminals adapt quickly to the latest technology, and we’re seeing that ChatGPT can be used to quickly and easily create convincing scams,” said Kevin Roundy, a technical director at Norton AntiVirus.

Credit Card Skimmer

And while there a number of ways that scammers have started to utilize ChatGPT, from phishing emails to elaborate love scams, one of the more interesting (and concerning) ways that they’re using the technology is to create “counterfeit” chatbots.

Similar to how criminals place card “skimmers” on top of ATM’s and point-of-sale systems in order to steal your credit and debit card numbers, cybercriminals are now installing counterfeit chatbots on popular websites in order to extract information from unsuspecting customers.

Posing as customer service agents for the company, the scammers will then attempt to get customers to give up their personal or financial information, presumably going on a massive Amazon shopping spree afterwards.

And now your moment of zen

That’s all for today folks!
