StableDiffusionXL
Doesn’t get much better than that folks
Stable Diffusion has announced the beta release of its new Stable Diffusion XL model this week, presumably targeted at clients looking to create the deepest of deepfakes.
Highlights of this latest version:
“Next-level” photorealism capabilities
Image-to-image prompting (input one image and get variations of that image)
Inpainting (reconstructing missing parts of an image)
Outpainting (constructing a seamless extension of an existing image)
It’ll certainly be interesting to see what people end up doing with this.

AmazonAI
Amazon has finally entered in the the AI wars with the introduction of “Bedrock,” a platform of pre-trained models that companies can use to build their own AI-powered apps.
Instead of creating its own AI products Amazon is taking the picks-and-shovels approach to AI, providing a set of tools aimed at supporting large customers looking to building “enterprise-scale” generative AI tools, a market that is expected to reach $110 billion by 2030.
“At Amazon we’ve played a key role in democratizing machine learning and making it accessible to anyone who wants to use it,” said Vasi Philomin, VP of generative AI at AWS.
“Amazon Bedrock is the easiest way to build and scale generative AI applications with foundation models.”
The bedrock platform currently includes access to models from startups AI21 Labs, Anthropic and Stability AI, along with access to the Titan foundation models, a group of models trained in-house by AWS.
Why fight to build the best AI tools when you can simply provide the foundational technology that everyone will need in the age of AI?
The AI Gold Rush
Beyond Amazon, there are a number of companies taking the picks and shovels approach to capitalize on the AI revolution.
By providing companies with the foundational technology needed to build AI tools they can extract value at scale, a smart strategy given the growth rate of the generative AI market.
Cloud Computing
Compute capacity is the heart of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, and key players in the space include Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
Microsoft is currently at the forefront of the market thanks to its early Azure cloud / OpenAI partnership, but Amazon’s latest Bedrock announcement will undoubtedly make the company a top contender in the space.
Chipmakers
Generative AI models require massive amounts of computing power, making microchips the workhorse of the AI revolution.
Nvidia is the current leader in the space, yet recently published results show that Intel’s AI hardware is faster at running certain models than any other chip on the market, meaning that the title of AI chip-king is still up for grabs.
What this all means
While many AI tools and companies are sure to come and go over the next 5-10 years, we believe that investing in the core technology powering the AI revolution is going to be a winning strategy.
