🤖 Sneak peak at Humane's secret AI wearable
4/22/23
Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!
Here are the AI headlines making waves:
🌊 Humane previews its AI wearable tech
🌊 Google unveils new Deepmind division
🌊 Insider’s “pivot to AI”
Let’s get into it!
Humane’s Secret AI Project
Humane CEO with prototype wearable in his pocket
Secretive AI startup Humane has been a topic of interest since raising $230 million dollars for a mysterious AI-powered wearable, although details on the actual product have been few and far between.
CEO Imran Chaudhri recently gave a TED talk to provide a demo of the startup’s new technology, and while the talk itself is not yet live, a journalist was able to capture a photo of the screenless device projecting information onto Chaudhri’s hand.
What we know right now is that the wearable computer works based on voice and gesture inputs, and that the device displays information by projecting it onto nearby objects, but stay tuned for more updates.
Google DeepMind
After a lackluster debut of Google’s Bard chatbot, Google is going through a major restructuring in order to accelerate the development of the company’s AI technology.
By combining the previously firewalled teams at Deep Mind and Google Brain, the new “Google DeepMind” team has the goal of “driving one of the greatest social, economic and scientific transformations in history.”
And while their early efforts at AI products have failed to produce the same level of enthusiasm as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, with the amount of resources at their disposal, they’re sure to come up with some exciting new products.

Insider’s AI layoffs
Only a week after announcing the company’s pivot to AI, with the company encouraging it’s team of writers to begin using tools like ChatGPT to boost productivity, Insider has laid off 10% of its staff.
"As you know, our industry has been under significant pressure for more than a year. Unfortunately, to keep our company healthy and competitive, we need to reduce the size of our team," wrote Insider president Barbara Peng in an email to staff.
Or in other words, “everyone else is using ChatGPT to write content, and if we want to stay competitive, we can’t continue paying humans to work here.”
Coincidentally, one of Insider’s largest shareholders is the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, which also happens to have a massive equity stake in Red Ventures, owner of the website CNET, which laid off 50% of its editorial staff last month after announcing a similar “pivot to AI.”
This is proving to be yet another example of the reality that the early adopters of AI will continue to thrive, while those that fail to harness the power of the new technology will simply be left behind.
