AI researchers from prestigious institutions like MIT, Yale, and Loughborough University are exploring the concept of "Collective AI," inspired by the Borg from the "Star Trek" series.
This futuristic vision involves a network of AI agents capable of sharing data and learning from each other, akin to the Borg's hive-mind. Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, this research aims to overcome the limitations of current AI systems, such as ChatGPT, which require energy-intensive retraining to acquire new knowledge.
The concept of Collective AI proposes a system where AI units can instantly share knowledge and adapt to new situations without the need for repeated training. This could significantly enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of AI systems, particularly in fields like cybersecurity, where rapid collective responses to threats are crucial. However, the researchers also caution against the potential misuse of such technology, suggesting that AI units should maintain independence and focus on ethical objectives.
The idea of agent-based AI systems working collaboratively is not new, with Stanford and Google developing a simulated world called Smallville, and MIT's "Society of Minds" approach, where AI agents engage in debates to solve problems. However, the concept of Collective AI takes this collaboration to a new level, promising a future where AI systems can share and grow their knowledge base continuously and autonomously.
