The Future of No Code

In the past, the barriers to entry for creating an app or software program were fearsome.

Sure, it was simple enough to sketch out a wireframe of your app idea, but getting the app itself built was a legitimate nightmare.

You had the choice between:

Option A: spending countless hours coding the app yourself (if you have the technical know-how, which I do not)

Or Option B: throwing yourself at the mercy of developers, spending tens of thousands of dollars in the hopes that they bring your dream to reality.

But thanks for recent advances in AI, this method of software development will soon become a thing of the past.

In the not-too-distant future, you’ll simply have a conversation with an AI, explain exactly what you want to build, and the AI will push out a finished product in a matter of seconds.

And if this sounds like science fiction to you, you need look no further than Mckay Wrigley, who has build an early prototype capable of this based on ChatGPT4.

Wrigley’s coding assistant “Jarvis” allows you to build a web-app from scratch, including creating the design and writing all the code, all from a simple voice command, a complete revolution in how software products are created.

And while Jarvis is an early prototype, with the rapid progression of AI tech, its only a matter of time before your next app idea is only a whisper away.

Sounds like my celebrity ASMR app will be coming sooner than I thought…

The State of AI

Stanford University has released it’s 2023 AI index report, highlighting the technology’s impact on the economy, the speed at which AI is progressing, and reflecting on how AI should be regulated moving forward.

Here are the highlights:

Demand for AI-related professional skills is surging across virtually every American industrial sector
AI models are accelerating scientific progress, including aiding in hydrogen fusion research and the generation of new antibodies
The misuse of AI is rapidly accelerating
Companies adopting AI are gaining a competitive advantage as a result of meaningful cost decreases
Policy makers are taking an increased interest in AI as concerns grow over the potential risks and dangers

AI job posts as a % of all job posts

One of the key highlights of the report was the rapid increase in the demand for workers with AI skills, which along with the booming investment in AI startups is only projected to accelerate.

And while AI has the potential create a bright future for the world, the report highlighted the lack of meaningful regulation in the space, noting concerns that companies may continue to prioritize profits over safety, and making the months and years ahead pivotal in determining whether AI will prove to be a boon or a bane to civilization.
