Supermarket Uses AI to Sell You More
A Japanese supermarket, Aruk Mitajiri, has taken a step towards enhancing the in-store shopping experience by leveraging cutting-edge technology.
With the help of Fujitsu's advanced AI, the supermarket has started analyzing customers' behaviors in real-time, using video cameras to detect various actions like lingering at displays, comparing products, interacting with in-store content, and more.
These observations are then fed to a generative AI, which manifests as a personalized "Avatar concierge". This friendly AI avatar engages with shoppers, providing them with real-time suggestions and customized sales pitches to help them find what they need. The aim is to make customers more confident about their purchases, ensuring they return to the shelves happy and satisfied, with their yen well spent.
Fujitsu collaborated with a research group led by Naoto Onzo, director of the Institute of Marketing and Communication at Japan's Waseda University, to bring this idea to life.
The team recognized that warmth, competence, and product design all play crucial roles in influencing consumer buying decisions. With this insight, they created a model capable of estimating behavior transitions and delivering engaging customer service and promotional content based on individual customer data collected through human sensing technology.
Customers now enjoy an engaging and consumer-friendly experience while shopping. This move also eliminates the need for extensive human resources, making the entire process faster and more cost-effective.
During the ongoing trial period until October 15, there will be close observation to ensure the AI functions smoothly. For instance, it remains to be seen how the AI will respond when it spots a man shopping for products typically consumed by women.
Fujitsu plans to launch a solution based on the trial during its 2023 financial year, which concludes on March 31, 2024. As they continue refining the AI-powered "Avatar concierge", the supermarket industry eagerly anticipates how this innovative technology will transform the shopping experience for consumers across Japan and potentially beyond.
