The Humane AI Pin: Not Living Up to the Hype
Upon its much-anticipated release, the Humane AI Pin promised to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, pitching itself as a seamless extension of our daily lives. Yet, early reviews from various tech experts suggest that potential users might want to pause before investing $699 plus a monthly $24 subscription fee.
The Humane AI Pin, developed by Humane, a company co-founded by former Apple designer Bethany Borgiorno, integrates a built-in microphone, camera, and a novel operating system named Cosmos. See it in action in the video below.
Its design was to operate as a "second brain," capable of making calls, sending texts, taking photos, and even projecting images right into your palm.
However, the reality seems to diverge significantly from these ambitious claims. Critics have consistently highlighted the device's slow and inaccurate responses. For instance, it struggles with basic tasks such as playing a single track of music or providing prompt weather updates—often taking nearly ten seconds to respond.
The device's vision capabilities, which are intended to recognize and interact with the environment intelligently, have also been underwhelming. Misidentifications—like confusing a Wall Street IPO sign for Ryde as "Lyft"—raise questions about the readiness of its underlying AI technology.
The pin's user experience is described as "natural" by some, like Chris Velazco from The Washington Post, particularly with interactions like using gestures to control the device's projector. However, this feature too falls short in practical settings such as bright sunlight, and the awkward positioning of the battery extender pack can lead to overheating issues, making it uncomfortable and sometimes unusable.
The company has acknowledged these issues and announced a software update aimed at expanding capabilities and improving performance based on these issues.
But at this point, it seems it isn’t yet ready to replace your phone 📱
