🤖 Tesla bot updates, Meta's AI chips, and replacing humans with AI

Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!
Here are the AI headlines making waves:
🌊 Tesla robots learn to walk
🌊 Meta’s new AI chips
🌊 Buzzfeed’s AI plans
Let’s get into it!
Tesla Bot’s On The Move
Since first being released at the Tesla AI day in August of 2021, Tesla’s humanoid robots have come a long way.
In a newly released video you can start to get an sense of how far they’ve come, with a handful of the new robots walking around and performing basic tasks on the factory floor.
The video also revealed that the AI powering the robots is trained using human demonstrations of behaviors and actions, including picking up and moving objects.
As to how Elon see’s the robots playing into the future of Tesla, he believes that the robots are a much bigger opportunity than many people realize.
Noting that the "Optimus stuff is extremely underrated," Musk said that demand for the Tesla Bot could be as high as 10 to 20 billion units, a number more than double the current population on earth.
According to Elon, Tesla robots are “probably the least understood or appreciated part of what we’re doing at Tesla.”
"A majority of Tesla’s long-term value will be Optimus… and that’s prediction I'm confident of."
You can check out a demo of the Tesla bot here.
Meta’s AI Chips
After announcing significant investments in AI, Meta has finally pulled back the curtain on its new investments in the new technology.
In order to power the company’s next generation of propducts, including generative AI, virtual reality, and augmented reality, the company has begun work on it’s own specialized AI microchips.
The company is working on two types of microchips:
The Meta Scalable Video Processor (MSVP), a superstar chip that's all about processing and transmitting video efficiently. The company’s VP of infrastructure claims that there was nothing on the commercial market that could handle the heavy lifting of streaming 4 billion videos a day as efficiently as Meta wanted, and this is the result
The Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA), designed to support AI-specific tasks. These chips will power Meta's recommendation algorithms - you know, the ones that keep insisting you want to watch videos of cats riding Roombas.
And while Meta isn't giving up the goods on who's actually manufacturing these chips, it’s a high probability that the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is involved…
So let’s hope for Meta’s sake that China doesn’t decide to invade any time soon.
BuzzFeed’s AI Plans
Earlier this week we briefly highlighted digital media company BuzzFeed’s new AI-produced content, but we thought it would be important to provide more details on exactly how the company plans to use the new technology.
With many CEO’s claiming that they are planning to use AI to boost worker productivity, and not to replace human workers directly, BuzzFeed seems to be taking a different path.
"The efficiency of AI is remarkable. It can produce high-quality content in a fraction of the time it takes a human writer," said Jonah Peretti, co-founder of BuzzFeed.
BuzzFeed president Marcela Martin is equally excited about the new technology.
"Instead of generating 10 ideas in a minute, AI can generate hundreds of ideas in a second,” said Martin.
"From an efficiency perspective, AI enables rapid prototyping of new content formats without the need to add fixed costs."
And in case you’re wondering, human beings are the fixed costs she’s referring to.
Fun times!
