Thinking Machines

Not content with an AI that’s only able to complete basic tasks, Microsoft is pushing hard to create a more powerful version of the technology that’s capable of mirroring human-level reasoning…

And they’re getting close.

“We're moving beyond basic algorithms, beyond merely recognizing patterns or playing chess,” said Dr. Sam Davies, Microsoft’s Lead AI Engineer.

“This new breed of AI is about reasoning, problem-solving, and understanding."

This type of AI functions using what’s called "abductive reasoning," meaning that the AI can make educated guesses based on incomplete information.

So, it's kind of like that friend of yours who jumps to conclusions…

Only it's probably right more often.

So what are the implications of an AI with human-like reasoning?

Imagine an AI helping doctors diagnose rare diseases by piecing together odd symptoms, or aiding in solving complex crimes…

The possibilities for this type of tech are nearly limitless.

Although given that the project is still in the early stages, it may be a few more years before we have an AI Sherlock-Holmes hitting the streets.

The Future of Education

While kids haven’t been forced to hunt through books at the library for quite a few years, the leap from the internet to AI is looking like it’s going to be even more impactful than the move from dusty books to the world wide web.

Lauren, a 16-year-old student who used AI for a research project, said that tools like ChatGPT allowed her “to find information I hadn’t found anywhere else online.”

“I was actually surprised about how it was able to give me information that wasn’t widely available, and from a different perspective."

And Karolina, a student at a highschool in Switzerland, used AI to create a video featuring an analytical dialogue between two AI-generated avatars for her sociolinguistics project.

When the director of the school saw what she had created she was awestruck, saying that this new way of presenting information was "so much more impactful" than anything she had ever seen before.

AI presents us with an entirely new way of looking at education, and if integrated correctly, AI would allow students to focus on higher value skills (like critical thinking and emotional intelligence) rather than spending countless hours memorizing facts.

And beyond helping to improve the education of students in developed nations, AI has the potential to completely disrupt and re-imagine education across the globe, and could help provide educational resources to the more than 263 million children that currently find themselves without access.

Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, sees AI as a game-changer that will democratize the availability of learning to all.

And to help in these efforts, his team has created an AI tutor that uses GPT-4 to debate with students, coach them on various subjects, and answer questions…

Providing a concept of how children could be educated in environments where teachers may not be available.

“I always thought it would be 10-20 years before we could even hope to give every student an on-demand tutor,” said Khan.

“But after seeing the power of ChatGPT it got me thinking that this new reality may only be months away.”
