The Real Dangers of AI
We’ve seen the letter calling for a pause in AI development, signed by over 30,000 researchers and professionals, including Elon Musk. We’ve seen Sam Altman say the risks of AI are ‘far beyond anything we’re prepared for’. Even Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called Godfather of AI, quit his job at Google to freely talk about the dangers of AI.
According to the experts, the risks of AI is somethign we should take very seriously. But how big are they? What are the real dangers of AI?
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres compares AI to an “existential threat to humanity” - and even puts it on the same level as nuclear war.
He even revealed that the UN is contemplating the establishment of a global watchdog agency for AI, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which oversees nuclear technologies.
The UN envisions an international collaborative effort to establish a code of conduct and guidelines that promote factual information, combat conspiracy theories and lies, and protect freedom of expression and information. However, reaching a consensus among member states on truth and falsehoods can be challenging, as different countries have varying perspectives.
While many warn us about the dangers of AI, it can sometimes be unclear what exactly these dangers are. And while there are many potential risks of AI, some of the most notable are:
the malicious use of AI for fake news, cyberattacks, and biased decision-making …
… autonomous weapons making wrong decisions, and …
… threat to privacy.
While AI has made our lives a lot easier in just a few months time, we should take the risks that come with it very seriously. Will they ever come true? Who knows.
To ensure a responsible and beneficial integration of AI, policymakers should implment the right policies and consult with experts to address the challenges and make informed decision. Or might it already be too late…?
