Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the company is set to "break new ground" in Generative AI this year, signalling a significant shift in Apple's approach to AI technologies. This announcement came during Apple's annual shareholders meeting and follows reports that the company has redirected resources from its electric vehicle project to various GenAI initiatives.
Historically, Apple has been more reserved in its GenAI investments compared to other big tech companies. However, Cook's statements during the Q1 earnings call suggest a strategic pivot from Apple’s "slower, more deliberate approach" to integrating GenAI into customer-facing products. Recent developments hint at Apple's increasing engagement with GenAI, including potential upgrades to Siri and the iOS search tool, Spotlight, to handle more complex queries and conversations.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to infuse GenAI into several applications, enhancing functionalities in Siri, Spotlight, Keynote, Apple Music, and Xcode. These advancements could be showcased in the upcoming versions of iOS, macOS, and iPadOS at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference this summer.
Apple's commitment to GenAI is further evidenced by its engineers co-authoring GenAI-related academic papers and the release of open-source models and tools for GenAI software development. Notable projects include Ferret, a chatbot built on the Vicuna model, and MGIE, an image-editing model responding to natural language commands.
With a reported annual investment of $1 billion in GenAI, including proprietary models like Ajax and an internal chatbot dubbed Apple GPT, Apple is rapidly catching up in the GenAI space.
