OpenAI's recent developer conference not only showed new exciting features like GPT-4 Turbo and custom ChatGPTs but also left the audience with a teaser from, at the time CEO, Sam Altman about what lies ahead. Rumors of GPT-5 surfaced, suggesting a multimodal AI model codenamed "Gobi" in the works. Altman didn't confirm or deny the speculation, but it adds a layer of anticipation to OpenAI's trajectory.
In the Q&A session, Altman addressed the GPT-5 chatter, stating that it's not a concrete project yet. OpenAI faces scientific challenges and the need for more computing power before making actual steps towards GPT-5. Altman has a realistic view, stating there's no guarantee it will work.
Altman sees GPT-5 as a potential solution for a broader range of tasks compared to its predecessors. While GPT-3 excelled in text, and GPT-4 expanded its capabilities across dozens of categories, GPT-5 aims for versatility. Altman predicts it will handle "most things you might want to build".
The GPT-5 rumors align with prior leaks from Brian Roemmele, who correctly predicted OpenAI's ChatGPT developments. According to Roemmele, GPT-5, codenamed "Gobi", is set for an early 2024 release. This multimodal model, supposedly incorporating text, images, and video, could introduce a new dimension to AI capabilities.
