UK Policymakers Urged to Speed Up on AI

The UK government faces the pressing task of swiftly developing detailed regulations for AI to provide businesses with much-needed certainty.

As this endeavor progresses, it is equally crucial for the UK to foster international cooperation and interoperability while ensuring seamless collaboration among various sectors and stakeholders – including government, businesses, regulators, and civil society.

A joint response from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and EY underscores these recommendations in relation to the UK government's AI white paper, "A pro-innovation approach to AI regulation".

The collaborative response, titled "Building the foundations for trusted artificial intelligence", strongly supports the pro-innovation stance, acknowledging the vast implications AI has on people's lives.

To ensure the comprehensive involvement of all citizens, the feedback and perspectives of diverse socio-economic groups, sectors, industries, and businesses of all sizes must be actively sought. Excluding AI development from a broad range of stakeholders would hinder progress and limit its potential.

Helen Brand OBE, Chief Executive of ACCA, emphasizes the significance of multi-stakeholder feedback and capturing the voices of small and medium-sized enterprises and UK regions. A flexible approach to AI development is vital to keep pace with its rapid evolution.

While certain areas may require more explicit guidelines to establish accountability, a balanced approach will foster responsible growth in AI.

In navigating the complexities of AI regulation, global policymakers need to create reporting and oversight approaches that inspire confidence in AI technologies across international markets. Ansgar Koene, EY Global AI Ethics and Regulatory Leader, emphasizes this need for global alignment.

The UK is presented with an opportunity to champion a trustworthy AI ecosystem. ACCA and EY highlight the pivotal role of the accountancy profession in AI regulation, given its expertise in risk assessment and control evaluation. Leveraging these capabilities will enhance the UK's global reputation as a responsible hub for AI development.
