UN: Women Most Vulnerable to AI

In a recent study unveiled by the International Labour Organization, the potential influence of generative AI on jobs has been scrutinized. The report reveals that while the overall workforce might not witness big shifts due to AI in the immediate future, specific job roles, like administrative roles, could experience huge transformations.

The ILO's investigation delved into the susceptibility of various job tasks to automation, spotlighting that 24% of clerical duties are highly prone to automation, with an additional 58% exhibiting medium-level vulnerability. Notably, the report suggests that women might face higher risks of job displacement owing to the integration of generative AI.

According to the ILO, "3.7% of all female employment in the world is in jobs that are potentially automatable with generative AI technology, compared with only 1.4% of male employment."

While AI-driven automation is projected to impact 5.5% of employees in high-income countries, the figure stands at a mere 0.4% in low-income countries, underscoring the potential difficulties in adapting to AI-induced changes across distinct economic landscapes.

The study primarily centered around the ramifications of chatbot applications, like ChatGPT, on tasks encompassing customer service, data management, record keeping, information processing, language services, and inquiry responses.

Offering a different perspective, a recent survey conducted amongst ordinary Americans revealed a higher degree of concern regarding AI's influence on workplaces. A staggering 62% of respondents expressed their belief that AI will wield substantial influence in the workplace within the next two decades, underscoring widespread trepidation about the future of employment.

In the broader context of AI's sway on jobs, a June 2023 report from McKinsey envisions a momentous paradigm shift in the job landscape. The report predicts that by 2045, AI could occupy 60-70% of employee working time, underscoring the urgency of upskilling the workforce to align with evolving demands.
