US Space Pauses AI Use: Worried About Security
The US Space Force has enacted a temporary ban on the use of web-based generative AI tools and large language models. A memorandum, dated September 29 and obtained by Bloomberg News, underscores that the use of government data on web-based generative AI tools is not permitted, except under specific authorization.
This pause directly impacts tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and chatbots that rely on LLMs to create new text.
While acknowledging the benefits of AI in enhancing workforce efficiency, Lisa Costa, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of the Space Force, raised apprehensions about cybersecurity, data handling, and procurement requirements. The risk of potential data leaks or hacking incidents stemming from feeding models with sensitive documents and prompts is a genuine concern. Costa has outlined plans to issue fresh guidance within the next 30 days.
This decision has already affected users of the generative AI platform Ask Sage – approximately 500 individuals. Nicolas Chaillan, the platform’s founder, expressed disappointment in the Space Force’s move, particularly in light of the Defense Department’s drive to accelerate AI adoption.
Chaillan emphasized that his platform meets stringent security criteria and is already in use by over 10,000 customers across the defense industrial base and other sectors of the Defense Department.
Despite the CIA's development of a generative AI tool intended for widespread use within the intelligence community, Chaillan contends that this ban puts the US at a disadvantage compared to China in AI development. He previously engaged with Costa and senior defense officials, asserting that his service had been "whitelisted" and authorized for use by the Air Force.
As of now, additional details regarding the Space Force’s decision and forthcoming guidance remain pending. This temporary ban underscores the mounting concerns surrounding data security and the responsible application of AI in government systems. It signals a concerted effort to strike a balance between technological advancement and safeguarding sensitive information.
AI regulation within government entities is one to watch closely in the coming months.
