The Death of Acting

The rate that AI is advancing is mind bending, with forecasts showing the potential for the new technology to disrupt a wide range of industries in the next 1-2 years…

And film making is no exception.

But how long will it be before AI is able to create entire movies?

Two years, if you listen to Joe Russo, co-director of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, who also sits on the board of multiple AI companies.

"What you could do with AI is use it to engineer storytelling and change storytelling," Russo said.

“You could say ‘Hey, I want a movie starring me and Marilyn Monroe. I want it to be a rom-com because I’ve had a rough day,’ and the AI will render a complete story with dialogue that mimics your voice.”

But the real value of AI, Russo believes, is in “the democratization of storytelling,” noting that, “anyone in this room could tell a story, or make a game at scale, with the help of AI tools.”

As to how he sees this new technology impacting the film industry, Russo believes that AI has forced studios into a true adopt-or-perish moment.

"Everything is going to evolve, and you're either going to evolve with it or you're going to be left behind," he warned. "That's how it's always worked throughout history. And we're at a critical juncture of evolution."

China’s AI Crackdown

Just when everyone was starting to have fun with all the cool new AI chatbots China has decided to lay down the law, introducing strict regulations on generative AI companies.

“Generative AI put into tension two of the top goals of the Chinese government: the control of information and leadership in artificial intelligence,” said Matt Sheehan, an expert on Chinese AI.

China’s Cyberspace Administration has drafted regulations for generative AI (such as ChatGPT) that require companies to adhere to strict censorship rules, ensuring the generative AI products reflect "socialist core values."

AI companies must now censor any content that undermines state power or national unity, a task that AI engineers in China are already hard at work on, although training AI systems to be consistently factual while adhering to China's ever-changing censorship rules is a challenge to say the least.

And while some experts believe this goal can be achieved over time, many doubt that the full range of censorship requirements will ever be met, a situation that could put China’s desire to be the worldwide leader in AI at risk.

CongressGPT

The US Congress has officially stepped into the AI chatbot game, recently acquiring 40 ChatGPT licenses from OpenAI.

The goal of the collaboration between Congress and OpenAI is to ensure that policymakers can better understand AI technology, with OpenAI guiding the legislators on how they can save time by using the tool to summarize reports and draft policy proposals.

Which opens up the real possibility that American AI regulations will end up being written by AI…
