🤖 Will AI Help Get Us to Mars?
NP #015
Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!
Today, we’re talking about the intersection of AI and space exploration, because NASA is starting to use AI more and more…
AI won't take your job but someone using AI might. Instead of opening ChatGPT every time you need an idea or support, use PixieBrix.
PixieBrix will help you create the perfect ChatGPT prompts to automate your work schedule. The PixieBrix AI Copilot lets you access your favorite ChatGPT prompts from any webpage.
Plus, the AI Copilot comes with popular prompts preloaded OR you can customize the prompts to fit your workflow.
Will AI Help Us Get to Mars?
AI and the journey to Mars—arguably two of the most interesting technology-related issues of today. Surprisingly, these seemingly distinct fields may share a profound connection. The question is: can AI help us get to Mars?
One thing’s for sure: NASA believes so.
NASA is reportedly developing an AI assistant similar to ChatGPT to aid astronauts in the field, allowing them to communicate directly with the spacecraft and detect potential issues.
Dr. Larissa Suzuki, a visiting researcher at NASA, is also exploring an alternative approach called federated learning, which enables rovers to share knowledge among themselves without immediately sending data back to Earth.
NASA is also in an active partnership with IBM to apply IBM's AI technology to NASA Earth science data. They aim to develop AI models, including a geospatial intelligence foundation model, to help researchers analyze and gain insights from large NASA datasets related to Earth processes. The models will be open and accessible to the science community, supporting NASA's Open-Source Science Initiative.
But that’s not all. In fact, AI is already actively being used in space exploration. It is already actively being used in many ways, for example to aid scientists in analyzing data and automating spacecraft operations.
From autonomous navigation and satellite operations to data analysis and planetary geology, AI is actively transforming our understanding of the universe.
It helps rovers navigate hazardous terrain, optimizes satellite maneuvers and detects anomalies in space data. AI is also used for rocket landing, star and galaxy mapping and predictive maintenance.
Other potential applications for AI in space include analyzing data from new planets or research initiatives, as well as making space exploration more accessible to newcomers, like when Elon Musk sends people to Mars. However, these possibilities are currently speculative and require further exploration and development.
Whether things will work out as well as NASA hopes they will remains to be seen. Nonetheless, it is undeniably promising.
