Will AI Replace Developers?
Emad Mostaque, the founder and CEO of Stability AI—the company behind Stable Diffusion, has made some interesting statements about what he thinks the future will look like for software engineers:
“There will be no programmers in five years." With the increasing influence of artificial intelligence, Mostaque envisions a future where AI capabilities reign supreme.
In a recent interview with Peter H. Diamandis for the Moonshots and Mindsets Podcast, Mostaque discussed the current state of the AI industry and shared his visionary outlook, limited to a five-year horizon.
The future doesn't appear promising for human coders, according to Mostaque, and he has some evidence to support his claim. Data from GitHub reveals that "41% of all code right now is AI generated”. Even more intriguingly, "In three months, we overtook Bitcoin and Ethereum (in GitHub) and developed a popularity (there)", underscoring AI's rising popularity compared to cryptocurrencies.
Stability AI has ambitious plans spanning multiple sectors. From protein folding and DNA analysis to chemical reactions, language models, and audio-visual data processing, Stability AI aims to construct the building blocks for a "society operating system”.
Mostaque also predicts that "by the end of next year, you'll have ChatGPT on your mobile phone without an internet connection."
Decentralizing AI is a fundamental aspect of Stability AI's strategy, as Mostaque emphasizes the importance of ensuring AI technology benefits individuals rather than working against them, aligning with the ethos of cryptocurrencies.
Transparency and democratizing access to AI technology are core values for Mostaque's company. In addition to Stable Diffusion, the team at Stability AI has open-sourced large language models that have been downloaded over 25 million times.
Job security concerns inevitably arise in the context of AI's rise. However, Mostaque presents a different perspective. Similar to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who viewed Ethereum as a "destroyer of jobs, creator of better ones", Mostaque approaches the AI revolution optimistically. He sees AI as a tool that enhances human potential rather than annihilating it.
"Humans are humans. Bring them the information that creates the most value, and you will change the world."
And at last, Mostaque had some words of advice to the young generation on what to do in today’s age of AI: “Drop everything. You should focus entirely on this.”
