Will AI Be Smarter Than Humans in 5 Years?
In AI, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI”,recently made headlines after his retirement from Google. Hinton's pioneering work on "backpropagation," a crucial algorithm, has paved the way for multi-layer neural networks to self-correct, underpinning today's powerful generative AI models. For this monumental contribution, Hinton was bestowed with the prestigious Turing Award, often dubbed the Nobel Prize of computer science.
Hinton's perspective on AI has evolved from optimism to caution. Initially envisioning AI surpassing human intelligence in 50 to 60 years, he now suggests it could happen within just five years. This forecast is even bolder than that of Ray Kurzweil, the head of Google Engineering, who predicted human-level intelligence in computers by 2029.
In a recent interview, Hinton emphasized that leading AI models today, including those by OpenAI and Google, exhibit genuine intelligence and reasoning abilities. While they may not possess consciousness as we understand it, Hinton believes that this could change with time.
Comparing the human brain's neural connections to current AI parameters, Hinton highlights that AI systems, despite having fewer parameters, encode knowledge that surpasses human capabilities. This suggests that AI's learning and knowledge retention capabilities are far more efficient.
Forecasts indicate that the next generation of large language models may be 5 to 20 times more advanced than current models.
As the EU nears the final stages of debate on comprehensive AI legislation, questions arise about its impact on smaller firms. The U.S. expresses concerns that this could favor larger corporations, potentially impeding productivity.
While G7 leaders aim to establish international AI regulations by year-end, the absence of key players like China raises questions about the global impact of any agreement. In this pivotal moment, Hinton stresses the need for ethical laws to guide AI's responsible development and application.
In a race against time, collective and collaborative action is essential. Governments, businesses, and civil society must transcend local concerns in favor of unified efforts to chart an ethical and sustainable path in the era of advanced AI. The stakes are high, and the choices we make now could shape the future of humanity.
