🤖 WokeGPT, ChatGPT's new API, and Humane’s mysterious A.I. tech
3/13/23
Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!
Here's what we have for you today:
The importance of ChatGPT API access
OpenAI’s response to WokeGPT
Humane’s mysterious AI tech
OpenAI provides API access
One of the biggest stories surrounding A.I. in the past week was OpenAI’s decision to make ChatGPT accessible to third party developers via an API.
Why is this important?
The cost to create the large language models powering tools like ChatGPT is prohibitive for all but the largest and most well funded companies (like Google and OpenAI).
But by providing developers API access, this has in effect democratized the chatbot technology, allowing smaller companies that otherwise would not have been able to develop the technology on their own to introduce the latest chatbot functionality inside their products.
One example of an ChatGPT API product is Snapchats new MyAI feature, while utilizes the chatbot technology to create virtual personal assistants for users, a move that many companies are sure to follow.
Welcome to the future ladies and gentlemen
And beyond simply providing access to the ChatGPT API, the company has also dramatically reduced the cost of the service to developers, which will ensure that the largest number of companies are able to integrate the service into their products.
“Through a series of system-wide optimizations, we’ve achieved 90% cost reduction for ChatGPT since December; we’re now passing through those savings to API users.”
This puts OpenAI into an interesting position where they could very well become the low-cost provider of A.I. technology to the world, a move that could make Microsoft’s recent $10 billion dollar partnership look like one of the best investments of the past decade.
OpenAI’s WokeGPT
While the capabilities of ChatGPT are certainly impressive, the apparent bias built into the tool has raised serious concerns, leading many to criticize the motivations of the OpenAI team.
Even Elon chimed in on the situation, referring to the company’s chatbot as WokeGPT and expressing his concerns that "the danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly."
Initially keeping quiet about the situation, OpenAI president Greg Brockman has since addressed the concerns in a recent interview.
"We made a mistake: The system we implemented did not reflect the values we intended to be in there," said Brockman. "And I think we were not fast enough to address that. And so I think that's a legitimate criticism of us."
Since the initial release, the team at OpenAI has introduced controls into the chatbot’s programming to limit the potential for dangerous or misleading responses from the tool.
"Our goal is not to have an AI that is biased in any particular direction," Brockman said. "We want the default personality of OpenAI to be one that treats all sides equally. Exactly what that means is hard to operationalize, and I think we're not quite there."
And while the initial bias present in the tool was indeed concerning, it’s a relief that the OpenAI team is actively addressing the situation.
Humane’s mystery AI project
Humane, which was founded in 2018 by ex-Apple executives, recently raised a fresh $100 million dollar Series C investment round lead by Microsoft and OpenAI, bringing the total the company has raised up to $230 million.
But what exactly are they planning on making?
Great question.
The actual product remains shrouded in secrecy, with the website claiming that the team is “creating a first-of-its-kind software platform and consumer device built from the ground up for artificial intelligence.”
This doesn’t give the clearest picture about what company has planned, but a leaked investor deck from 2021 provides a glimpse into the planned product.
Below is information taken from the investor deck:
A cloud connected, sight-enabled AI platform with server side app ecosystem
The Camera:
As a camera it captures moments you didn’t think to capture, moments you want to recall. You can mark them by tapping record and those moments will be cued to be processed on the server so you can recall them in different styles, either as images or videos.
Images and videos can be authored in various styles of film-making, documentary, lifestyle, candid, photojournalism, sport, street, landscape, etc. All assisted image processing is done server side, all color graded, stabilized, cropped perfectly to the element you want to relive.
The Platform:
Going beyond communication, fitness, activity, and digital assistance, the product will take over micro transactions that once required a smart phone and are now even simpler, faster, and more fluid with the aid of sight assisted context awareness.
Where is… Which Way… What is… When is…
Hybrid camera and LiDAR data streams allow for accurate and natural gestures to achieve quick responses to questions. What kind of car is that? What is that building? Will this fit my wife? How much did I eat today? How much is this on Amazon? Put this on my wish list.
Camera stream can be made available to apps to enable boundless experiences like personal live broadcasting, senior monitoring, memory recall, and meditation.
And while its hard to tell how close the finished product will be to the information above (given that the investor deck was leaked close to 2 years ago) considering the team behind the product and the investors behind the company, it will certainly be interesting to see what they come up with.
And now your moment of zen
That’s all for today folks!
