Zuck Is Coming for OpenAI
In May, a gathering of top AI CEOs at the White House saw a notable absence: Mark Zuckerberg. While leaders from Alphabet, Microsoft, and OpenAI were present, Meta's CEO was missing.
Since that meeting, Meta, under Zuckerberg's leadership, has launched products directly challenging OpenAI's offerings. From their own language model, Llama 2, to a fleet of specialized chatbots in their messaging apps, Meta is leaving no stone unturned. They've even taken a stand against OpenAI's call for tighter AI research controls.
This aggressive move seems to be driven by a clear business motive. OpenAI is gaining traction with popular consumer products, attracting top AI talent, and advocating for stricter controls on AI research. This poses a potential threat to Meta's growth and innovation, prompting them to adopt a 'destroy mode' strategy.
Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stepped into competition with Zuckerberg the moment he introduced ChatGPT. Meta envisioned chatbots as the next computing platform back in 2016, even creating a precursor to ChatGPT called M. Though M was primarily human-powered and eventually shuttered, the vision was clear.
ChatGPT's launch in November 2022 marked a turning point. Altman not only realized Zuckerberg's vision but also created the fastest-growing consumer product of its time. The technology finally caught up to the dream, and Meta had competition on its hands. This posed multiple risks to Meta, including users spending more time on ChatGPT and potentially neglecting their messaging apps.
To counter this, Meta deployed a strategy of specialization. Instead of one generalized bot, they released over two dozen specialized ones, each catering to specific use cases. Examples of chatbots like these could be for law (like Harvey) and entertainment (like Character.ai).
Meta is also taking a direct jab at OpenAI's GPT-4 model. Companies are rapidly adopting GPT-4, contributing to OpenAI's impressive revenue figures. Meta's response, Llama 2, is an open-source language model providing developers with greater customization options.
Meta's moves reflect a determined effort to maintain their dominance. As the competition heats up, it's clear that both Meta and OpenAI are ready for an intense face-off in shaping the future of AI.
